When teens know where the boundaries are, they feel more secure. Clear expectations reduce uncertainty, make decision-making easier, and can help lower anxiety. That sense of stability is one of the strongest protective factors against substance use.
Set your teen up for success by:
✅ Setting clear expectations
✅ Following through consistently
✅ Setting clear rules about where they go and who they spend time with
✅ Checking in regularly, not only when problems come up
✅ Staying calm, confident and firm
Will they test the boundaries? Absolutely. That’s part of growing up.
Your job isn’t to move the line. It’s to keep the line clear. Healthy boundaries don’t hold teens back. They give them the structure they need to make confident choices and stay on track for success.
