First Grade Has a
"Beach Party"
| |
After first grade students learned all about oceans and ocean
life, they celebrated their new knowledge with their own brand of "beach
party" held on the Friday before Spring Break.
| Each classroom was festooned with brightly colored fish, lobsters,
crabs and other sea life, along with nets, rubber boats and life preservers.
Teachers also set up learning centers where students could have fun while
learning more about the ocean as an ecosystem. |
| The classes kicked off their day's festivities with a beach party
luau, complete with hula girls, who were eager to demonstrate their dancing
skills. |
| Beach wear and bathing suits were the dress of the day. Students
spread out their beach towels and feasted on typical picnic fare with their
friends. Friday's weather turned out nice and warm, to everyone's
relief. |

| |
| What kind of learning experience would it be without sampling the kind
of food that fishes eat? So Mrs. Hicks brought out the "worms" during
recess for students to taste. The worms, which looked pretty authentic,
were actually candy rolled in graham crackers. |
| |
| Some were more enthusiastic than others about eating their worms.
Above, Mrs. McKnight tries to coax a none too hungry protester down off
the monkey bars, while another (below) tries the "maybe if I put my head
down she'll go away trick" to avoid tasting his worm. |

Others had no problems slurping down their wiggly treats.

After tasting the "treats" several even came back for seconds.

| Students inspect the remains of their "yucky" snack. The Annual
First Grade Sand-Free Beach Party made a splash with all concerned, even
for those with more squeamish appetites. |
